BROKEN BIRD

Broken Bird is an improvised performance video exploring the boundaries between constraints and freedom. Through a caged human head and the transformation of movement, shod with a fake ostrich leg, the artist’s fight for freedom becomes both poignant and familiar. Like a bird unable to take off from a median filled with pigeons, or a graceful phoenix lost in a plane stranded in a junkyard, the artist becomes fully aware of his freedom and finds success in failure…
“Ironically, it’s when I work to be free that I find the meaning of the word freedom.”

This image is almost surreal, forever linked to him. It is both dark and intense, through it we enter into life… the birds as if flown into the body that dances in the luminous streets of Johannesburg.
